Polishing & Maintenance

Silver oxidizes when it comes into contact with light and oxygen. Food silver should therefore be stored air-dry ;tt, dry and på a dark place. Food silver should not come into contact with materials containing rubber, e.g. rubber bands. If you eat food with a lot of sulfur content (e.g. eggs, ketchup, salmon etc.) always wash the dishes immediately after the meal. When using table silver regularly, they do not need to be polished. If your table silver has oxidized, you can restore the shine with silver dip or silver paste.

When it comes to polishing for table silver, there are two; different, a moving and a cream variant.

The mover is very handy there; you just put your silverware down (knives for example), let them lie there for 1-2 minutes and then pick them up and rinse in warm water and dry with a soft cloth. This "Silver Dip" can also be used for jewelry (be careful with pearls and the like). What to think about when you use this "Silverdip" you should be on a counter with a newspaper as a substrate (try to avoid spilling on the counter, can cause rust damage) and preferably with a window. The "silver dip" does not give as good results as the cream, but it is more convenient and it is done faster.

"Silver cream" is suitable for those who want to make a thorough Job that gives long-term results. The cream is very good at; really oxidized surfaces and larger silver rims. It takes a little more time with the cream but it will be much better. Here it comes with a "sponge" that you wet and take a little cream on. (the cream is a little hard when it is new, but you can pour a little water and let it stand for a while; it will be creamier) and rub in the food silver/silver foil with. Rub until you feel the surface is good and rinse the cutlery/silver strap under warm water, dry with a soft cloth. If the surface is really oxidized (black), you may need to do it several times.

Important to think about; in general, when polishing silverware, do not use anything (e.g. cloth) that scratches or wears too much on the silver surface, då can damage the silver ring (which is on both silver and nickel silver cutlery). If you don't get a good surface or if there are stains that won't go away, it can be like this; that you need to hand in the cutlery/silver strap for re-silvering.
When polishing candlesticks, should one try to avoid bringing water or cream on the underside and absolutely do not submerge them completely in water, this can in the long run lead to the filling inside loosening.

Dishwashing
New silverware must be hand washed before use. Food acids, which are found in e.g. ketchup, egg, lemon etc. can attack the silver and the stainless steel knife blade, so the cutlery should be washed immediately after use. Soaking silverware in water or using detergents containing chlorine is not recommended there; it can damage the cutlery.

All food silver, silver and nickel silver, to be washed in the dishwasher. Då silver is a very durable and resistant material, actually better than any other material. The silver also takes more modern detergents, but be careful to keep silver and stainless steel to yourself.

About silver

Äkta silver has a fine content of at least 830 parts per thousand, i.e. 83% silver. It is an alloy (metal mixture) of two or several metals, i.e. the basic elements (see page 25). The remaining 17% is usually copper. Sometimes the silver can be fully or partially alloyed with cadmium. 830 silver is called working silver and is the most common fine content in table silver. The most common jewelry alloy is 925 parts per thousand (92.5%) silver and the rest is copper. 925 silver is also called Sterling or Sterling silver. Sterling silver is whiter and softer to process than sterling silver. Therefore, 925 silver is suitable for forging, while 830 is suitable for cutlery.

Within a few years, we can have see 800 thousandths of silver in cutlery and jewellery. This content is common for the continent. Silver is used for jewellery, silverware and decorative ornaments, but more than 60% of the available silver is used in the electronics and photography industries. Very early civilizations associated the yellow color of gold with the sun, and for the Egyptians gold was the symbol of their sun god Ra. På in the same way, silver was tied to the moon for its more silver-white shine. The original name for silver was "Luna", which means mine. Later, the name was changed to silver to "argentum", which means white and shiny. Silver occurs solidly in nature, but usually it is bound in chemical compounds. In the cases where it occurs solid, it is often together with gold.
